Wi-Fi coverage, range and roaming

Why a strong router still leaves weak rooms, how far each band reaches, and how phones choose where to connect.

Most Wi-Fi complaints are about coverage and consistency, not peak speed: a room where video stalls, a phone that clings to a distant mesh unit, a new 6 GHz network that a device won't join. These are physics and configuration problems, and each has a cause you can check.

This topic explains how walls, floors and building materials weaken each band, how devices decide when to roam, and what to change first: placement, wiring, then equipment.

The decisions that matter

  1. 1 Fix placement before buying Moving the router or a mesh unit closer to where devices are, and away from cabinets and exterior walls, costs nothing and often matters more than a newer standard.
  2. 2 Expect 6 GHz to cover less At the same transmit power, 6 GHz loses more signal through walls and floors than 5 GHz. Plan an access point or mesh unit per floor if you want 6 GHz across the home.
  3. 3 Wire the backhaul if you can An access point or mesh unit with an Ethernet connection keeps its full wireless capacity for your devices.
